Allegheny Township is situated in western Blair County and includes an area of approximately 29.6 square miles, with a population slightly under 7,000 people. The township is bordered by a number of other municipalities, including the City of Altoona, Logan Township, Frankstown Township, Hollidaysburg Borough, Duncansville Borough, Blair Township, Freedom Township, and Juniata Township. Much of the western part of Allegheny Township is forested; the township’s developed areas are located mainly in the eastern part of the township.
The principal watersheds that pass through Allegheny Township are the Beaverdam Branch and Blair Gap Run watersheds. A tiny section of the Clearfield Creek watershed also crosses the western part of the township. Residents enjoy visiting landmarks in the surrounding communities, including the Allegheny Ridge Heritage Area, the Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark, and the Bellwood-Antis Rail Trail.
